70 Years

From a vision to reality .

On the 17 July 1951 , the South African Institute of Refrigeration was founded in the Bordeaux Hotel in Cape Town . Dr Guido Dreosti was elected as the first President of the Institute .

In 1962 the SA Institute of Refrigeration decided to invite members of the air conditioning industry to join the South African Institute of Refrigeration which led to the formation of the South African Institute for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration – SAIRAC .
Environmental control measures to ensure the above measures are as follows :
• Airflow control
• Air temperature control
• Air quality control
• Humidity control
• Noise generated by an environmental control installation
• Energy consumed by an environmental control installation
As time went by , SAIRAC widened its footprint with the establishment of additional branches in the following cities :
Port Elizabeth in 1961 . In March 1961 , the Port Elizabeth region of SAIR opened and Messrs TF Longe and L Broderick were elected Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively . SAIR , recognis ing the ever-increasing role that air conditioning was starting to play , looked at including this sector into the Institute .
In July 1962 in Cape Town the South African Institute of Refrigeration and Aircondition ing ( SAIRAC ) was formally inaugurated , and the first Cape Town centre was formed .
On the 25th of June 1963 , the Transvaal Centre was formed with Drs Denkhaus and Hodgson as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively .
This was followed in 1967 with the establishment of the Natal Centre . Messrs RF Marsh and G Alder were appointed as Chairman and Vice Chairman respectively . It is important to note that SARACCA was instrumental in encouraging the formation of SAIRAC , particularly as it gave the air conditioning sector a home .
The purpose of the Environmental Control Industry The purpose of the Environmental Control Industry is to implement environmental control measures to ensure the following :
• The health , safety and comfort of people occupying buildings
• The preservation of perishables
• The protection of the environment
The Objectives / Mission of SAIRAC In terms of Section 3 the Constitution and Rules of SAIRAC , the objectives of the Institute are as follows :
• To advance and protect the arts and sciences of refrigeration , air conditioning and the allied arts and sciences .
• To encourage scientific research and the study of principles and methods in the fields of refrigeration , air conditioning and the allied arts and sciences .
• To promote the unrestricted dissemination of knowledge and information amongst members by the holding of meetings , the publication of papers and other appropriate ans .
• To assist in educational activities and to encourage the adoption and maintenance of high standards of instruction and technical and professional training in the fields of refrigeration , air conditioning , and the allied arts and sciences .
• To co-operate with Governmental agencies and with universities , colleges , schools and other organisations and groups having the same or similar objectives and purposes .
• To procure and maintain the recognition of the professional status of air conditioning and refrigeration engineers .
• To assist in the formation of regional centres and to regulate , operate and control these under the direction and the pleasure of the Institute .
• To do any and all things necessary or proper in connection with , or incidental to , any of the foregoing .
