It
is
still
an
offence
to
beat
or
shake
any
carpet
rug
or
mat
in
any
street
in
the
Metropolitan
Police
District,
although
you
are
allowed
to
shake
a
doormat
before
8am.
Why
this
law
ever
existed
is
questionable.
All
swans
belong
to
the
crown.
There
was
a
time
when
eating
swan
was
a
done
thing,
however
like
deer,
they
were
hunted
to
near
extinction
and
to
preserve
them,
and
they
were
made
-?
with
a
few
exceptions
-?
property
of
the
crown.
Now
they
have
been
protected
for
so
long,
that
eating
them
has
gone
out
of
favour.
The
Queen
even
has
an
official
Keeper
of
the
Swans.

There
is
still
the
idea
however,
that
many
of
the
more
outrageous
laws
are
still
in
effect
today
when
actually
they've
either
been
repealed
or
were
urban
legends
in
the
first
place.
So
although
at
one
time,
it
may
have
been
entirely
true
and
legal
that
all
English
males
over
the
age
of
14
were
to
carry
out
2
hours
of
longbow
practice
each
weekend
supervised
by
the
local
church
official,
it’s
an
obsolete
law
now
and
does
not
apply
to
anybody
in
this
day
and
age.
This
begs
the
question,
who
exactly
decides
that
a
law
is
out
of
date
and
needs
to
be
changed?
Well
the
Law
Commission,
set
up
in
1965
does
exactly
that.
It
was
originally
set
up
to
keep
the
law
under
review
and
to
recommend
reform
where
it
was
needed.
They
sift
through
aged
and
irrelevant
laws
of
England
and
either
bring
them
up
to
date
or
repeal
them.
So
don't
worry,
many
of
the
stranger
and
outdated
laws
do
not
apply
to
you,
and
you
won’t
have
to
take
up
archery
practice
or
let
a
pregnant
woman
urinate
in
your
hat!
