In Memory of Philip Hough
Mr. Hough was the second longest-serving member of Saint David’ s faculty. Hired in 1979 to teach strings, he later founded the Philharmonic Ensemble in 1983. Throughout the years, he advanced the school’ s orchestra program to include our boys performing at Carnegie Hall and other notable venues. Intelligent and wise, Phil, a true maestro, loved sharing his passion for music, especially musical instruments, with the boys. As he noted when honored for his five-decades’ service during our 75th Anniversary celebration:“ The experience of hands-on musical training isn’ t necessarily about playing at the most advanced level; but rather, the physicality and education of and with the instrument that stays with them much later in life. Some will continue to play on, just as any other hobby like golf or tennis, but once having done it, the experience is forever a part of you.”
Phil’ s words and works will forever reverberate within the walls, and within the hearts of all of us who had the pleasure of knowing and working and learning with him— he will forever be a part of us.
