A 59-Year Tradition Holds Strong
The Thanksgiving Food Drive, which dates to 1967, is Saint David’ s longest running service project. Led by the eighth grade under the guidance of teacher Tom Ryan, the drive involves participation of all classes. The boys sell pies, collect donations and contribute to food baskets, which are distributed prior to Thanksgiving to the United Congregational Church and to the Bethel Community Church, sponsored by staff members Stanley Livingston and William Best. This year, 650 pies were sold and over 150 boxes of food assembled. In addition, a generous alumnus donated 100 pounds of bacon and sausage, and 100 turkeys.

Principal Renaee Smith from Supreme Preparatory and Kindergarten School in Montego Bay, Jamaica, joined the seventh and eighth grades for Chapel in June. She spoke to them about Supreme Prep, her students, and the impact that Saint David ' s boys have had in supporting the school in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, one of the worst hurricanes in the history of Jamaica. Throughout the spring, the boys led several fundraisers for Supreme Prep, including walk-a-thons, t-shirt sales, and the Are You Smarter Than an Eighth Grader quiz show.
Principal Smith spoke briefly about the power of philanthropy and how our generosity, no matter how big or small, can impact the lives of people far away. Mr. Ryan and eighth grader Tyler W. were pleased to present Principal Smith with a check representing our fundraising in support of the rebuilding efforts at Supreme Preparatory School. The money raised will purchase new chairs for the entire school.
