Medieval Times in Third Grade

n Third Grade, teachers highlight the boys’ rigorous pursuit of leadership, teamwork, self-awareness, and hard work. As third graders, the boys are the oldest students in the Lower School, and it is important for them to see themselves as leaders. They are role models for the younger boys and are given opportunities throughout the year to demonstrate their maturity, practice responsibility, and share their top-notch academic work. Because third graders are in their last year of Lower School, they often feel motivated to have their best year before entering the Upper School. To support, encourage, and foster the boys and their newfound sense of maturity and responsibility, we prepare them to become knights of Saint David’s. In the spring, third graders participate in a Knighting Ceremony, where the King (Dr. O’Halloran) dubs each boy a knight of Saint David’s. The Knighting Ceremony has become a long-standing Saint David’s tradition, where third graders accept their call to leadership and continue on their path to becoming good men. To prepare for this special ceremony, boys read about knighthood and reflect on what it means to be good men. They prepare to take on the responsibility of being a knight of Saint David’s, a defender of the good. In the spring, reading groups read a variety of fiction and non-fiction books related to the Middle Ages. In the past, boys have read non-fiction books such as Days ???????-?????????
