Each Thanksgiving, Saint David’s boys collect and deliver canned foods and turkeys for families in need.
When it comes to helping others, teachers are continually astounded by the generosity, ingenuity, and hard work of their students. The recent Tsunami Relief Effort is a case in point. There is no evidence that Student Council President Demetrios Elias ’05 had heard the Christian Rock song, “With the Change in Your Pocket, You Can Change the World,” but that idea sparked an Upper School Coin Drive spearheaded by the Council. Lower School boys decorated the collection cans and produced posters to highlight the event. When Demetri initially approached Dr. O’Halloran with the idea for the coin drive, the Headmaster insisted that the drive not be a one-shot-deal limited to a single fundraising event. Instead, the efforts would need to be conducted over the long-term and involve giving of time and effort, as well as money. In fact, the boys continue to conduct coin drives as well as bake sales and other fundraisers to help the tsunami victims, and they have an increased awareness of the needs that exist both in the wake of a tragic event and in the months or years that follow.
