Master Class with Saint David's Parent Stephanie R u hle and Dan Arnall
A Canticle After School class was fortunate to be visited
by parent Stephanie Ruhle (anchor of “MSNBC Live with
Stephanie Ruhle” and “MSNBC Live with Velshi and
Ruhle”) and Dan Arnall (Executive Producer of “NBC
Weekend Nightly News”). These leaders in journalism
engaged our school newspaper writers in consideration
of important questions: What makes a legitimate source?
How does one determine what makes a good story? What
characteristics are essential to a good journalist?
“Free press is essential to democracy functioning,” Ms.
Ruhle told the boys. “Journalists have to be the voice
of truth. It's imperative that they respect the story, the
sources, and the reader.”
“I was so impressed by these boys,” she added. “In both
the thoughtful nature of their questions and answers, they
took the content seriously. When I asked what quality
makes someone a good journalist, I love that the first hand that shot up was one of the youngest boys. He smiled and said ‘a
curious and inquisitive person.’ To me, that showed how much these boys are really thinking about the work...Often times,
kids tell us that they want to write about sports or music because they are fans and want to meet athletes or artists, but the
Canticle boys were more interested in digging deep on important subjects and learning how investigative journalism works.”

Saint David’s Benefit Auction on February 8, 2019 by Karen Villa, Three Theta
Homeroom teacher, this was an opportunity to be immersed in the language
and culture of Teruel, Spain, to improve Spanish language proficiency and also
a chance to further connections within the Saint David’s community. Teruel
Family Immersion (teruelfamilyimmersion.com) is run by Esther Diaz, a
substitute Spanish teacher at Saint David’s School and long-time friend and
colleague of Doctora Gilbert.
For the last two weeks in June, Karen
and her husband David visited the ancient
city of Teruel, 300 km east of Madrid.
Their guide, Esther Diaz grew up in the
city of Teruel. Said Mrs. Villa, “Esther’s
intricate knowledge of the people and the
city made her the perfect guide. Teruel
is a small city, but it was no problem to
spend two weeks exploring the wealth
of history, landmarks, and culture this
beautiful city has to offer.” - Karen Villa
