From then on, rowing became my passion. I loved the objectivity of it: if you were the faster person, you would always get the spot in the boat( something I felt was missing in hockey). I saw that the harder you worked, the better you became. If there is one lesson to instill it would be to take that chance and try something different. You never know where your passions may lie and what is the best fit for you. One of the best parts about a Saint David’ s education is that we are taught to be“ Renaissance Men.” Seeking to consistently work hard with passion in different areas of life allowed me to find a new outlet that I would never have expected to succeed in. some extra meters in before class. One of the beautiful things about rowing is you are able to see your progress through numbers on a screen or a stop watch. When you are beating an opponent in a race, you face backwards so you are able to feel like a king while moving away from your competition. I would go on to row for the Junior National team by the end of High School, be recruited to a D1 school, row at under 23 worlds, and eventually after a few years post-college, row in an Olympic Class boat at the World Championships.
Leonard“ Lenny” Goodman Futterman’ 06 is an Olympic hopeful for the 2020 Games in Tokyo for Men’ s Rowing. He attended Choate Rosemary Hall’ 10 and Boston University’ 14. He works for Edge on Demand, a technology suite for Energy Brokers, as well as Adé Lang, a men’ s wear start-up. Lenny trains in Philadelphia, PA, and has intentions to move back to New York City to continue his career, post-Olympics.
