Saint David's Magazine BOYS Vol 33 No 1 | Page 7

Saint David’s School now stretches from its original Delano and Aldrich townhouses to Madison Avenue on 89th Street, a school reimagined and redesigned to meet the needs of twenty-first century learners and educators, in accordance with its mission and values. On that first day, with mouths agape and eyes wide open, Saint David’s boys delighted in a school with room to breathe—halls that could easily accommodate classmates walking side by side, or working in small groups in commons areas. Even better was what awaited in so many areas of the program: • STEAM labs with space to spread out with partners to construct large cardboard structures for a Second Grade STEAM project; or to engineer, build, and test LEGO ® robotics windmills in Fifth Grade. • A beautiful new fully-equipped woodshop and art rooms located next to science labs in the STEAM Suite for integrated art/science study like the First Grade leaf project and the Pre-K “Fun City.” • Spacious homerooms that provide faculty with great flexibility in their teaching, and with large arched windows that capture the sun, inviting boys to think and be inspired. • Commons areas where boys collaborate on projects like the Dia des los Muertos ofertas or the Age of Exploration Museum. • A theatre with acoustics that allow string instruments to sing and will enable the drama program to flourish (in addition to thrilling audience members who now enjoy proper theater seats.) • A library suite that beckons all to visit and settle in with a good book to read for research or pleasure. • Three gyms all in one building! A fitness center with spin bikes, and a real locker room! All in the same place, on 89th Street, so that boys can quickly transition to and from sports, and the school can accommodate more community members for basketball games. • An additional lunchroom, enabling two lunch periods instead of three, freeing up scheduling and increasing efficiency. • Ease of movement among floors, with the townhouses connected to Graham House and all of the specials grouped in the core of the building. • A tranquil and elegant Faculty Study where faculty can research, recharge, reflect. • A suite of learning center classrooms to meet the learning needs of all boys. Opposite: Architectural rendering of Saint David’s new façade. Headmaster O’Halloran leads all in “three cheers for Saint David’s” at the Ribbon Cutting/Official Opening in November; the blessing by Father Keenan; Student Council President Peter Karasyov ’19.
