Math Meets Art
Two fall math investigations, one in Lower School, the other
in the Upper School, exemplified how Saint David’s boys
are engaged in real-life application of mathematical concepts
with a dash of art.
In the Lower School’s Measuring for the Art Show, second
graders used a variety of strategies to correctly determine
the dimensions of several pieces of “artwork” represented
by different colored cuts of fabric. In Upper School, sixth
graders employed their knowledge of geometry and the
architectural style of St. Thomas More Church to construct
an extension to the church. The boys used their knowledge in
math and art to create designs
that were geometrically sound
and aesthetically pleasing.
Both projects reflected Saint
David’s approach to math
teaching: engaging boys in
activities that reinforce skills
and concepts, and require
them to use problem solving
to deepen understanding.
Top Chef in Spanish
Ms. Brenes’ Sixth Grade Spanish Class enjoyed playing Top Chef, a competition in which four groups prepared a typical
Spanish dish. The scores were close, but the batido de fresa (strawberry milkshake) team narrowly beat pan tumara, guacamole,
and gazpacho.
