The object chosen for May 2018 is a male stag beetle, Lucanus cervus. This stag beetle was found dead on the Recreation Ground at Great Dunmow, Essex in May 1999. It was handed in to the police station at Dunmow, and a Police Wildlife Liaison Offi cer gave it to Saffron Walden Museum to be preserved. The stag beetle is the largest beetle in Britain. Adult males are up to 75 mm long. They have large antler-like jaws, or mandibles, which are used for wrestling with other males during the breeding season. From mid May to August you may see a male stag beetle fl ying at dusk looking for a mate. Females grow to 50 mm long, with normal sized mandibles. The stag beetle has a long life cycle, three to seven years of which are spent underground in their larval stage. The larvae are large white grubs with orange heads that can be up to 11 cm long. They eat decaying wood. Come to Saffron Walden Museum to see this male stag beetle and fi nd out what a female looks like. You can learn more about their life cycle and view the log pyramid by the castle which was built to provide a home for stag beetles and other insects.
