The Rotary Club of Saffron Walden
The Rotary Club of
Saffron Walden is
joining hundreds
of Rotary clubs
in the UK in the
Purple4Polio Crocus
Corms planting
project 2017.
The purple crocus is a symbol of
Rotary’s worldwide campaign to
eradicate polio, with its colour
representing the purple dye used to
mark the fi nger of a child to indicate
they have received their life-saving
oral polio vaccination.
The massive project to eradicate polio
was started by Rotary over 30 years
ago, when over 350,000 cases of the
disease were being reported every
year. As a result of the project the
number of polio-endemic countries
has dropped from 125 to just three,
with over 2.5billion children receiving
vaccinations as a result of Rotary’s
efforts and fundraising. The number
of case reported worldwide so far in
2017 is fi ve.
Tony Chapman, the local Rotarian
organising the project said “Our club
is proud to continue supporting the
Purple4Polio crocus project to help
eradicate this terrible disease from
the world. We are purchasing 5,000
crocus corms to plant around the
town.”
Tony explained that for every pound
donated by Rotary Clubs to the
eradication programme the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation will donate
a further two pounds.
The crocus corms have been made
available as a result of a partnership
between Rotary and the Royal
Horticultural Society.

Rotary and the Royal Horticultural
Society partnership
The continuing partnership between
Rotary International in Great Britain
and Ireland (Rotary) and the Royal
Horticultural Society (RHS) will see
Rotary clubs, Britain in Bloom groups
and other RHS community gardening
groups further developing this joint
initiative to plant a target of 10 million
purple crocus corms in their local
communities in Autumn 2017.
This partnership allows community
planting and fl owering to raise the
profi le of Rotary Purple4Polio whilst
also helping the RHS’s Greening Grey
Britain campaign. It will bring a wide
cross section of communities together
to transform public spaces, brighten up
local areas and benefi t local wildlife,
including bees, by planting this rich
source of nectar. To get involved
contact your local Rotary club.
Please note the crocus species being
used are Ruby Giant. Children should
be supervised at all times and crocus
corms should not be ingested. Crocus
species are not toxic to people,
however, if signs of sickness are seen
medical advice should be sought
immediately.
Look after the ones you love, and St Clare, this Make a Will Fortnight
Picture of Danielle Mathias,
St Care student social worker
When it comes to looking after our
family, there isn’t much we wouldn’t
do to take care of them. It may come
as a surprise then, that when it comes
to stating our wishes for after we’ve
gone, more than half of adults living
in the UK admit that they do not have
a Will.
To mark St Clare’s Make a Will
Fortnight 2017 the Hospice is
reminding people that writing your
Will is one of the most important
things you can do to ensure that your
family is cared for – and that it is
never too soon to start thinking about
it.
From the 12th to 23rd June, thirteen
solicitors’ offi ces across West Essex
and East Herts, the catchment area of
Picture of Danielle and her family
the Hospice, have kindly volunteered
their time to enable you to make your
Will. Solicitors local to the Uttlesford
area are participating, including
Heckford Norton in Saffron Walden
and Foort Tayler and Wade & Davies in
Great Dunmow.
Making a Will is something which St
Clare student social worker, Danielle
Mathias, admits she and her partner
Karl had never really thought about
before she began working at St Clare.

The 28 year old mother of two who
lives in Stansted, was busy planning
her family’s future, saving to buy their
fi rst home and building her career.
However, after helping families at
St Clare, Danielle has a whole new
outlook on what it means to care for
her own family.
Danielle said: “Working as a social
worker at St Clare has made me
realise that you never know what is
just around the corner. I have seen a
number of young people, with young
children, pass away at St Clare – and
it makes you think. When it comes to
looking after our families, there isn’t
anything we wouldn’t do. Writing your
Will is so important. It is a simple thing
that we can all do to ensure that our
family is cared for. Life is precious,
and you can’t be afraid to have these
conversations.”
From the 12th to the 23rd June, over a
dozen local solicitors are volunteering
their time to enable you to make your
Will. All that they request is that you
kindly make the suggested minimum
donation to St Clare Hospice of £180
for a Single Will and £250 for a Double
Will.
