Saffron Walden U3A
There are over 1000 U3As nationwide with membership exceeding 800,000 . The Saffron Walden U3A is proud to be the first U3A to be set up in Essex in 1983 and our membership currently exceeds 800 . U3A actually stands for University of the Third Age - childhood / school being the first age , working life the second age and retirement the third age .
But please do not be put-off by the word university . We are a self-help , self-managed , lifelong learning cooperative for those who are retired or semi-retired , providing opportunities for our members to share learning experiences in a wide range of interest groups , to pursue learning - not for qualifications - but for fun and to socialise with like-minded people .
Most of our members reside in and around the Saffron Walden area and new members are always welcome . We currently run about 36 activities which offer a wide range of interests from Art to Dancing , Philosophy to Latin , Indoor Bowling to Pilates , Choir to Poetry and many more as well as outings and theatre trips to top London shows .
Term times are similar to school terms , running from September to July . We hold monthly Open Meetings with a guest speaker and produce our ‘ Update ’ Magazine for members three times a year , copies are available at the Tourist Information Office .
Our annual Membership Fee is currently £ 10 with a lower fee of £ 5 for the summer term after Easter . Course fees are very reasonable and co-ordinators can be contacted via the website for further details .
If you are interested in joining , please contact our Membership Secretary on 01799 550328 or visit our website at www . saffronwaldenu3a . org . uk where you can access an application form . Our registration day is 4th September 1.00pm at the Saffron Walden Baptist Church .
Landlord prosecuted over poor housing conditions
A private landlord in Saffron Walden has been fined for letting poor and potentially dangerous housing , following a prosecution by Uttlesford District Council .
Sarah Anne Henson , of Whiteshot Way , pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Magistrates Court on 27 April to offences relating to matters of fire safety as well as general disrepair under the Housing Act 2004 and The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation ( England ) Regulations 2006 .
The case was brought against Mrs Henson by the Council following a fire which broke out at her property on 7 September last year . No person was injured in the fire at the property , which was rented by several tenants , but a cat died .
Mrs Henson was fined £ 286 by the magistrates , and ordered to pay costs of £ 820 to the Council .
Roz Millership , Assistant Director of Housing , Health and Communities at the Council , said : “ This case highlights the need for all landlords to be aware of their legal duties and responsibilities towards the management of their properties . It also sends out a strong message that the Council will not tolerate landlords who let dangerous and poor accommodation for residents , and that we will take action when it is appropriate to do so .
“ However , it should be pointed out that the Council seeks prosecutions of this type only as a last resort . We are committed to working with all landlords so that they understand their responsibilities , and we are here to advise and assist them to improve their properties .”
If you are a landlord and are seeking some advice , or are a tenant wanting to report poor housing , please contact the Council ’ s Environmental Health Team on 01799 510482 or email environmentalhealth @ uttlesford . gov . uk
