Sand colic
Sand colics can be diagnosed ultrasonographically with a specificity of 87.5 % and a sensitivity of 87.5 %. Small and more dorsally located accumulations of sand were more difficult to detect sonographically when compared with radiography . Ultrasonography can be used to monitor the resolution of the sand accumulation , as well as the associated motility abnormalities and colon wall thickening .
Left dorsal displacement of the large colon ( LDDLC ) Left dorsal displacement of the large colon is similar to nephrosplenic ligament entrapment . In both conditions , the left dorsal and ventral colons migrate dorsally between the spleen and the left abdominal wall . In LDDLC , the colon does not move as far dorsally and does not become entrapped in the nephrosplenic space . Diagnosis of LDDLC is made sonographically when gas-filled large bowel is imaged along the left side of the abdomen dorsal and lateral to the spleen . The spleen is also ventrally displaced by the dorsally displaced large colon . If the left kidney is visible but the spleen is ventrally displaced with a horizontal dorsal border and colon dorsal to the spleen , a left dorsal displacement is present . If this involves the cranial portion of the colon the stomach may also be ventrally displaced . Rarely , the displaced colon is fluid-filled and transmits the ultrasound waves so that the colon , spleen and kidney can be visualized .
Idiopathic muscular hypertrophy of the small intestine
Thickening of the muscular portion of the ileum and jejunum can also be detected sonographically both transrectally and transcutaneously . Hypertrophy of the muscular layer of the ileum and jejunum appears sonographically as a much thicker central hypoechoic layer of the intestinal wall . The ileum is most frequently involved , but involvement of the rest of the small intestine occurs . Motility of the affected segments is usually absent or markedly reduced .
