SPINAL REFLEXES (WITHDRAWAL) AS AN INDICATION THAT THE ANIMAL
PERCEIVED TOUCH OR DEEP PAIN. The reaction of the animal trying to bite,
kick, or move away is the true indication that these stimuli are perceived.
Gentle pricking of the skin over the trunk, particularly the lateral aspects of the
body wall, results in a contraction of the cutaneous trunci muscle which is seen
as a flicking of the skin over the trunk (panniculus response). The sensory
stimulus travels to the spinal cord in the dorsal branches of the thoracolumbar
