SAEVA Congress 2018 Proceedings | 12-15 February 2018 | ATKV Goudini Spa anaerobic infection is present. Thickening of the wall of the umbilical remnant structure usually occurs, particularly with chronic infections. Urachal abscess In most foals, multiple internal umbilical remnants are involved in the infectious process. The urachus is the most common structure affected in foals. If the umbilical vein is infected the vein should be carefully scanned up to and including the liver to evaluate the extent of the infection. Uroperitoneum Ultrasonographic evaluation of foals with suspected uroperitoneum results in a rapid confirmation of the diagnosis and localization of the probable site of the defect. A large quantity of anechoic fluid is present with the gastrointestinal viscera floating in the fluid. In foals with a ruptured bladder, the bladder is collapsed, folded on itself and contains little or no fluid (urine). 122
