degeneration /disease. Further laterally the dorsal aspects of the ribs, the articulation process and transverse processes of the lumbar vertebrae can be evaluated. Acoustic   shadow   caused    by   DSP   LTP   Dorsolateral view of the lumbar dorsal spinous processes and their articular (cranial to left of the image) Right dorsolateral transverse image of the lumbar epaxial musculature and the hyperechoic double lines of the articular processes of the lumbar vertebrae (arrow) with the hyperechoic lumbar transverse process in the far field (LTP) (left to left of image) *   *   Splitscreen dorsolateral transverse images of the left (on left) and right (on right) articular processes (*) of the lumbar vertebrae The articulation processes of the lumbar vertebrae can be visualized. They can be seen with the transducer held transversely slightly parasagittaly and directed slightly ventromedially, as two short hyperechoic lines immediately lateral and near to the base of the DSPs. They should be smooth and regular. 15-‐18  February  2016      East  London  Convention  Centre,  East  London,  South  Africa     106
