South African Equine Veterinary Association Congress 2015 Protea Hotel Stellenbosch
numbers are low, the greater the distance, the greater the number of fatalities. Comparing
numbers of starts per endurance-related fatalities, 50-mile fatalities occur more than twice as
frequently as LD fatalities, and 100-mile fatalities occur 13 times more frequently than those of
the LDs. To place these numbers in perspective, the risk of fatality in a 100-mile ride was no
greater than that for Thoroughbred racehorses in competition.
