116   46TH  ANNUAL  CONGRESS  OF  THE  SAEVA        SKUKUZA      16-‐20  FEBRUARY  2014     Amikac in 10 mg/kg IV q 24 h Amikacin has a wider spectrum of activity than gentamicin. Less nephrototoxic than gentamicin Foals: 20 - 25 mg/kg q 24 h Potentiated - sulphonamides Strepto micin Extensive resistance 30 mg/kg (of drug combinat ion) q 12 h orally Bactericidal 15 – 24 mg/kg q 8 – 12 h IV (slowly) Poor anaerobic High lipid solubility, wide distribution and good tissue penetration. Broad spectrum Gram +ve and gram –ve Crosses blood brain barrier. Decreased activiy in pus / purulent fluids. (TMS interferes with synthesis of folic acid from PABA, with sulphonamide competively inhibiting PABA and purulent tissues are rich in PABA) (TMP has short half life in horses therefore BID dosing necessar y) Reaction to intravenous trimethorpim/ sulfadiazine esp when given rapidly (collapse and death) Do not give IV TMS with detomodine (dysrhythmias and death) Do not give concurrently with procaine penicillin Neutropenia with prolonged use (folate synthesis suppressed) Absorption from GIT reduced with feeding. Sulfadiazine is better than sulfamethoxazole Bacterial resistance common IMHA   116
