In a Texas study, regular (nonhonors) elementary students who participated in a school chess club showed twice the improvement of non-chess players in Reading and Mathematics between third and fifth grades on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills. Chess dramatically improves a child’s ability to think rationally, increases cognitive skills, improves children’s communication skills and aptitude in recognizing patterns: therefore, proper study and practice of chess results in higher grades, especially in the areas of English and Mathematics. There will be a school-wide chess tournament towards the end of the session in which students will earn awards, key chains, medals, and/or trophies!
