St . Joan of Arc Chapel Milwaukee , WI The Kubala Washatko Architects
Originally known as Chapelle de St . Martin de Seyssuel , the St . Joan of Arc Chapel was constructed around 1420 in the community of Chasse-sur-Rhône in southeastern France . The church served the village parish for more than 400 years until it fell into a state of disrepair . In the late 1920s , the chapel ruins were reconstructed on a Long Island , New York , estate , and in 1965 the historical chapel was reconstructed on the Marquette University campus . Today , the chapel serves as the physical and spiritual heart of the campus and represents the largest work in the collection of Marquette ’ s Haggerty Museum of Art .
The university hired a consultant team of historical restoration specialists to address maintenance and upkeep of the more than 600-year-old structure to ensure its ongoing presence . Recent studies confirmed the necessity of significant renovation efforts . These included not only immediate needs , such as roofing , security , and temperature control , but also long-term assessment of critical renovations . The implementation plan included repair and replacement of historic terra-cotta clay tiles , repair of the historical steeple , improvements to mechanical and electrical systems , mitigation and repair of water infiltration and plaster damage , historical finish analysis , and major site improvements to address accessibility , safety , and aesthetic deficiencies .
JURY COMMENTS : The level of craft in this reinvigorated chapel is outstanding , as is the care taken in the restoration . It is beautiful that it is now an interfaith chapel , although it started its life centuries earlier as a Catholic chapel . The power of its sacred space and elements lends sacredness to its new audience — a university community — who engage with it as an educational tool as well .

Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul Providence , RI DBVW Architects , Inc .
Completed in 1889 , the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul combines Romanesque and Gothic Revival styles that contribute to the character of downtown Providence . In 2018 , the Diocese of Providence initiated a project to repair and preserve the aging building . The $ 9.5 million endeavor addressed the deteriorated original building envelope , including replacement of the Monson black slate roof and the preservation and repair of deteriorated Portland brownstone at the north elevation and two 156-foot-tall masonry towers .
The design and construction teams worked collaboratively to ensure that repair and replacement of deteriorated brownstone occurred only where necessary . The project team identified an acceptable brownstone replacement that met the material properties of the existing stone and matched the color range found on the cathedral exterior .
The height of the towers and roof areas proved challenging . An industrial ropes technician performed an initial envelope assessment , rappelling down the building to document conditions , sound masonry , probe exterior woodwork , and remove unsound material that posed a risk . Multiple drone flights involved laser scanning the exterior and taking high-resolution photography that enabled the design team to create a model of the building and detailed , rectified orthophotographic building elevations . Both tools were critical in developing to-scale repair packages that expedited on-site review and repair .
JURY COMMENTS : This restoration is an amazing transformation . It was not easy or inexpensive , but it benefits more than just the people who use the cathedral . It is a monumental community asset that uplifts the neighborhood . A very careful , high-level restoration with copious research . An incredible commitment to detail .
