Like so many other nonprofit organizations, the recent recession
posed a serious challenge to Partners’ fundraising efforts.
However, in 2011 Partners was able to generate revenue that
exceeded expenses. This success was possible because Partners’
board and staff reached out to new donors as well as longstanding
supporters, and launched new initiatives and innovative programs
that clearly responded to the needs of sacred places nationwide.
Individual and Membership Giving
One of Partners’ newest donors challenged us in an important
way: he pledged to give $50,000 if we could obtain $50,000 gifts
from four other donors. In 2011, Partners received two out of the
four gifts needed to meet the challenge, and we expect to receive
the third and fourth gifts in 2012.
Foundation Funding
Thanks to ongoing support from longtime funders such as the
Amon G. Carter Foundation, the Ryan Foundation, the Richard H.
Driehaus Foundation, and Lilly Endowment, Inc., Partners has
been able to widen its programmatic offering, as well as develop
new initiatives that help to strengthen and support sacred places.
Our Making Homes for the Arts in Sacred Places program received
broad support from a variety of funders, including the Robert R.
McCormick Foundation, the Barra Foundation, and the Connelly
Foundation. The program continues to attract interest from many
different constituencies.
Earned Income
Partners began to diversify its earned income projects in 2011. For
example, we are now offering one-day New Dollars/New Partners
training services, and have been retained by the Johnstown Area
Heritage Association to work with civic leaders in Johnstown,
PA, to guide the re-use of three vacant Catholic churches. In
addition, Partners began to plan a new earned income program:
Capital Campaign Consulting Services (CCCS) for historic
houses of worship. Building on the trust we have earned in faith
communities over two decades, our innovative fund raising
tools and approaches, and the expertise and skills of our staff,
CCCS will allow us to provide competitively-priced, high-impact
fundraising services to parishes and congregations, while creating
a new stream of earned income for the organization.
