UPDATE on Partners:
Pennsylvania Office
The spires, rose window,
and buttresses of Church
of the Advocate in
Philadelphia, PA, clearly
define the Gothic Revival
style of this National
Historic Landmark. It
received a $100,000
award from Partners
for Sacred Places and a
$500,000 Save America’s
Treasures grant.
In the Philadelphia area, the New Dollars/New
Partners for Your Sacred Place program, through
which Philadelphia-area congregations receive
essential training in fundraising and communitywide partnerships, is augmented by workshops and
collaborative projects. New Dollars graduates can qualify
for matching grants that target historically significant
congregations that play a major role in the strength and
stabilization of their neighborhoods. Congregations
receiving grants also need to demonstrate strong and
committed leadership and a comprehensive plan
to address urgent repair needs – resources that are
fostered through the New Dollars training.
Many elements of both the New Dollars training and the
application process for a capital grant help to prepare
congregations for other grant opportunities. There
is a strong overlap between Partners’ grantees and
sacred places in Philadelphia that have received Save
America’s Treasures (SAT) grants, a federal program
that was established in 1998 to encourage and support
preservation projects in the private sector.

Administered by the National Park Service in
partnership with other federal agencies, the SAT
program has proven extremely successful, having
awarded over $300 million to projects in all 50 states,
spurred over $400 million in matching, non-federal
funds, and created more than 16,000 jobs between
1998 and 2009. Initially, SAT grants were off-limits
to historic structures with active congregations and
