TAKING FLIGHT IN LOWER SCHOOL Lower School students have a special zest for learning . We encourage this natural enthusiasm by introducing students to a wider base of knowledge that enables them to connect with the larger world . Also , the students ' increasing sense of personal accomplishment and a growing awareness of their own learning styles become a focus as they begin to grow in knowledge . As students progress through the Lower School years , they continue to develop a deep love of learning and responsible study habits .
Enter an Academy or Hardey classroom and you may find students digging into a novel or acting out a scene from a play . They might be working through a social studies research project , making a presentation , or exploring world cultures . Both science and math provide opportunities for more challenging analyzing and problem solving . Studies in French and Spanish continue as beginning conversational skills are explored . The whole child — mind , heart , body and spirit — is further nurtured with classes in religion , physical education and wellness , visual arts and music .
The Lower School years are crucial to children ’ s increasing view of themselves as learners . Sacred Heart offers many paths to further develop critical thinking skills while encouraging kindness and self-confidence . The Lower School counselor , special area teachers , enrichment coordinator , and reading and learning specialists are available to support students and homeroom teachers to ensure each child develops to their greatest potential .
Sacred Heart also provides opportunities for Lower School students to further develop social awareness , as well as enhanced self-management and responsible decision-making skills . It is our goal to help students strengthen their capacity to integrate skills , attitudes and behaviors , and to deal effectively with daily tasks and challenges .
