The course is aimed at experienced designers and is presented every second year on a different topic, which is selected based on its relevance during the year of presentation. The topic that has been selected by the SABI Council for the course in 2016 is sub-surface drainage systems. In South Africa an area of approximately 16.74m ha is being cultivated and 1.676m ha is registered for irrigation. It is estimated that 241 630 ha is affected by rising water tables and salinization, and problems appear to be expanding as there are many causes of drainage problems in South Africa. Planning and design of sub-surface drains has being undertaken since 1965 by members of the Soil and Irrigation Institute (today known as the Agricultural Research Council), and the staff of the Directorate of Agricultural Engineering of the Department of Agriculture. Various techniques are used by the engineering practitioners in the field to determine the layout spacing, pipe diameter, drain slope, etc, from various inputs. The practices, approaches and design techniques for sub-surface drainage was reviewed, upgraded and compiled recently in a 5 year research project funded by the Water Research Commission (WRC), and the newly published report will form the basis of the three day course to be presented by renowned SABI Fellow and past president Felix Reinders of the Agricultural Research Council’s Institute for Agricultural Engineering.
