As farming reflects the international trend to high-tech agriculture , it ’ s not surprising that drones are being increasingly utilised for the ultimate bird ’ s eye view of matters on the farm .
James Paterson , CEO of Aerobotics , an Award winning Cape Town-based start-up , says that , indeed , several industries are using drones , in South Africa the main areas where drones are being used . The main areas are agriculture , mining and surveys , filming , security and antipoaching applications .
As Paterson says “ drones have a big use-case in agriculture ”. In irrigation , designers and planners can use drones , for example , to perform accurate surveys over large areas much faster and more accurately than before . In agriculture , the Aerobotics ’ data can be used for early problem detection , aid with irrigation management aid with fertilizer programs , irrigation probe placement and soil and leaf sample sites .

“ Our target markets are primarily the Agricultural , Mining and
Survey industries . Our business model is to sell the hardware ( the drone plus the sensor system ) to our client , and handle all data processing for them through a data processing contract . Thus we sell directly to farmers , consultants or service providers that don ’ t need expert knowledge about drone data processing .”
Interestingly , the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International estimates that farms will eventually account for an
