President’s Message
Maximise water conservation!
N
ever before has the main theme of this issue, drip irrigation with
its associated water and energy savings, been of more relevance.
The seemingly never ending drought that continues to ravage
large parts of our country, has precipitated (pardon the pun) desperate
measures to deal with desperate situations.
The time has come where all sections of
our communities have to stand up and
take responsibility for water conservation.
Efficiency of water use, whether it be
domestic, industrial or agricultural, is now of
paramount importance.
Punitive financial penalties for domestic over
use seem to be largely ineffective. The key
lies in education of all sectors of society,
with an emphasis on the youngsters, to
create a generation of South Africans that
are “Water Wise”.
To this end, SABI magazine can be relied on
to continue providing technical information,
insightful articles and statistics, vital to the
maximisation of our most precious asset.

Food gardens - which are a vital part of food
security in South Africa - are also featured.
Innovative vegetable garden initiatives such
as the collaborative aquaponics project at
the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
in Port Elizabeth are to be applauded.
