Gilbert and Leona Schumann
Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established by Barbara Given,
Michigan State University College of Nursing,
University Distinguished Professor, to honor the lives
of her parents, Gilbert and Leona Schumann. It was
Gilbert Schumann, who died on April 18, 1993, who
inspired the creation of this scholarship. Gilbert was
a farmer, husband, loving father and grandfather.
Leona Schumann died on September 23, 2007, after
several years of declining mobility. She had a long life
as a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Gilbert’s long battle with ill health raised concerns
with Leona and their children about the adequacy
of care that the elderly receive. It is for this reason
that the Gilbert and Leona Schumann Scholarship
will always be awarded to nursing students who
exhibit a commitment to the care of elderly.
This scholarship provides financial assistance to
graduate students enrolled in the College’s advanced
degree programs with a focus in gerontology.
Students shall be selected on a basis of academic
merit with a minimum 3.5 grade point average.
