Change is difficult . Every professional counselor knows that as they ’ ve seen thousands of individuals and families struggle with change . But the encouraging thing is that counselors also see the tremendous capability for change that can occur .
Our brains even resist ‘ big change ’ ( for safety reasons ), but sometimes life calls for big change . It ’ s not impulsive change , but well-thought out and planned change and the reason why that change is necessary .
But most change occurs in the small everyday decisions that lead to small behaviors , which when done over and over and over again , become our habits ( both good and bad ). Those habits help us find success or hinder us , but we get to choose most of them ourselves .
Habits may form in only weeks , while others may take many months . It doesn ’ t matter the time involved , what matters is that we keep-on-keepin ’ -on with consistency and determination to reach the goals we want .
New Year ’ s is the perfect time to ‘ reset ’, to look back at last year ’ s challenges , mistakes and our reactions to those . We also can take stock of our success and look forward with intention and planning to other changes that bring us greater satisfaction in life … and greater satisfaction in the person we will become in the coming year . wake them up into consistent , small steps that will inspire , give you daily opportunity for optimism , and bring success !
