Program description : San Antonio Apartment Association ( SAAA ) partnered with THRU Project in July 2022 to help educate newly independent adults aging out of foster care about rental housing in San Antonio .
The young adults participating in the THRU Project are next-generation apartment residents but they may not have as much support or access to resources as other young adults may have . Less than 50 % of youth that age out of the foster care system graduate from high school and they frequently experience housing instability . Forty percent of the homeless population have spent time in foster care . As part of the Life Skills program and to help these young people navigate the transition to adulthood and establish stable housing for themselves , SAAA will share how to find and apply for an apartment and what they need to know about the financial considerations related to housing .
SAAA and THRU Project also plan to educate young adults on various career paths available within the San Antonio rental housing industry , supplementing efforts by several SAAA member companies that already collaborate with THRU Project ’ s mentorship program .
SAAA hopes these contributions to the THRU Project will help set these program participants on a path of long-term success by helping reduce their risk of homelessness , prepare them for the responsibility of rental housing , and gain insight into the many career opportunities in the rental housing industry .
