t. Lawrence College (SLC) offers several varsity, extramural, and intramural sports to students of all skill levels. Whether you played competitively through high school, or just want to play for fun, there are several options to choose from. Current varsity sports are women’s and men’s basketball, cross-country, golf, rugby, and soccer. These teams compete against other Colleges within the Ontario Colleges Athletics Association (OCAA) in a regular season, followed by an OCAA Championship, where the winner advances to the National Championship to compete against Colleges from all over Canada. In recent years, St. Lawrence College varsity teams have turned up the heat in the OCAA, posting incredible wins, upsets, and surprises. Recent successes include: S • SLC cross-country runner Richelle Moore qualified for the 2012 National Championship after winning Gold at the OCAA Championships. Training camps are open to all students • Vikings golf team captured the SLC Tri-Campus Cup in 2012, crushing the Schooners (Brockville), and Sharks (Cornwall) by 18 strokes in team play. and will be underway the first week of September. The teams compete in local competitive leagues, and will be facing other OCAA College’s in exhibition play, as the teams prepare to enter the OCAA Varsity schedule. Returning students will notice a few upgrades this year, with the gym being rebranded, soccer and rugby fields receiving new equipment, along with a few other surprises still to come. You can follow SLC Athletics on Twitter @ AthleticsSLC for the latest news and scores updates. • Women’s Rugby overcame a short roster (due to injuries), to qualify for the OCAA Bronze Medal game for the second consecutive year. • Men’s Rugby finished one point short of a playoff spot in 2012/13. The team captured the OCAA Bronze Medal in 2011/12. • Women’s basketball team finishing 4th overall in Ontario last season, with players and coaches winning several OCAA awards (12 in total). • Women’s Soccer qualified for the playoffs in 2012/13 for the first time in several years, and is showing strong signs for a successful 2013/14 season. • Men’s basketball team finished 6th in the OCAA East Division, barely missing a playoff spot. • Men’s Soccer was able to pull off not one but two impressive upset wins over top OCAA teams in 2012/13. 14 SA Voice September 2013 Student Association of St. Lawrence College | www.SAvoiceSLC.com
