SASLCK Board Bulletin W elcome to the end of year installment of the Student Association Board Bulletin! The purpose of this section is to promote communication between the student owners of our association and the elected Board of Directors. This bulletin is part of an Ownership Linkage Plan that includes polls, owners’ tables and email communications. This past week was the last meeting of our outgoing 2013-14 board, so the following highlights will cover the last four months of board meetings and activities. As always, our student owners can access all meeting minutes at savoiceslc.com/government/. • November The board received an update on the OMB ruling on including students in the City of Kingston district redistribution. Kingston is the first municipality in Ontario where students must be counted as part of the district population. Herb Steacy, Manager of Athletics and Student Life, reported that there was a growing possibility for the development of a new Student Life Centre, but there is no specific timeline. The board also reviewed student fee protocols for the 2014 and final 2013 version of the Ownership Linkage Plan. • December featured a visit from Valerie Closs from SLC Employment Services and an update from Herb Steacy on the potential future development of a new Student Life Centre. The board also heard a funding proposal by students from the CYW program to help fun their Pink Shirt Day plans and initiatives. This proposal was approved up to $7,450 in assistance. In other notes, the Board Direct Inspection committee delivered their final report on the inspection of Student Association operations. • January We were visited by members of the BScN program to request funding for the 2014 nursing outreach trip. This proposal was approved up to $8,500. Herb Steacy delivered a Student Life Centre update and the board discussed GPA requirements for present and future members of the Board of Directors. President and Executive Director Morgan Davis made a funding request to invest in a long-term Student Association Extraordinary Learning Fund that was granted. The meeting finished with discussion on the 2014 board elections and extended terms of office were granted to Matt McLaren and Ruth Lau-MacDonald. • February This month’s meeting included an educational report from Victoria Stinson on the Enactus Community Showcase, as well as a funding request from Herb Steacy regarding advanced planning for a new Student Life Centre. The board approved his request for $25,000 for research funding to understand the full needs and requirements for eventual student use of a Student Life Centre. Directors also approved the funding for the 2014 Leadership Honorarium awards. The meeting ended with a discussion on leadership succession planning for the 2014-15 board. These highlights should provide some closure for the activities of the 2013-14 board.
