ROWING AT THE University of Pretoria

- Thato Mokoena , Tuks Rowing Club Head Coach , National Squad Head Under 23 Coach

For almost 20 years now the University of Pretoria Rowing Club , TuksRowing , has consistently performed at the highest level of university sport in South Africa , producing numerous athletes of an elite calibre . This did not happen by accident . TuksRowing strives to embody a culture of excellence and aims to develop athletes to their own fullest potential ; this means we work hard ! But this does not also mean that we do not have fun .

The Tuks boat club , and indeed university rowing as a whole , is completely different to rowing at a junior level in South Africa . Rowing after school is a choice , and this is reflected in the club spirit and attitude towards training and racing : everyone wants to be there and to do their best . This fact , coupled with the academic stresses inherent to university life , results in a highly supportive community within Hatfield that gives new students a firm pushing off point from which they can begin to thrive in this newer , more mature phase of their lives .
Some of the most notable performances of the TuksRowing Club in the last year include winning the Student Sports Club of the year for five consecutive years at the University of Pretoria . In 2022 , the A men won the RMB Universities Boat Race for the 13th consecutive time and the A women for the 5th consecutive time . Winning the overall USSA Rowing Trophy in 2022 as well as the Overall USSA Indoor Points Trophy are also two of the most prestigious trophies that can be won by a University rowing club .
