Under one roof Roofing is the main element of the building envelope. It protects both the building and most importantly the occupants which is the primary reason for standards and having qualified engineers and contractors design and install the roof. All the elements that make up the roof and support structures have a responsibility to ensure the safety of the structure. It is sad that, as a country, and particularly as an all important part of the building envelope, we have unqualified installers doing work that compromises structure and safety. Official bodies have their hands full trying to address this issue, but it seems like a ‘cancer’ growing faster than the cure. While professionals have statutory bodies to ensure compliance, the contracting side falls short, not through their own doing, but rather those of a Department of Labour that seems disinclined to regulate such occupations. Well done to the bodies that continue to uphold proud traditions of contracting and not drop to the level of the unqualified element that fails the industry every time. Let 2020 be the year that all voluntary bodies get together as ‘one united contractor group under one roof’ so to speak – to address the issues of compliance and the registration of contractors (successfully achieved by some bodies), and to tackle the issue of main contractors who stall payment to sub-contractors and then close their doors, leaving good people and companies out of pocket, and in some cases, closing their doors and adding to the ever-increasing unemployment rate.
