I bid you adieu
As cold fronts and‘ west-easterly winds’ – as climatologists like to say – will be seen throughout the month, I hope you are keeping warm and safe. At about this time last year, Knysna experienced ravaging fires destroying homes and businesses. Let us hope that it will not be repeated this year.
The industry is abuzz with activity with events, workshops and launches taking place one after another. We attended the South African Institute of Architects Awards( SAIA)( page 10) and Totally Concrete Expo( page 8). These events look at different challenges that must be overcome by the industry and how to address them.
There is a willingness to change, as CEO of the South African National Roads Agency( SANRAL), Skhumbuzo Macozoma, says that the construction industry is talking about transformation but are engaging differently.
It is inefficient for the industry to go the same place in different directions and often results in going nowhere. Policies and laws are in place but there is a lack of implementation and monitoring and these are just some of the issues that were highlighted at the expo. Hopefully, in the near future, we will walk the talk.
Safety is the code word for Joint Building Contracts Committee( JBCC) on page 6. The association discusses how it is better to be safe than sorry in contract agreements. Funnily enough, Gyproc carved out an incredible museum from an old decommissioned silo( page 18) and ensured that workers were safe at all times was just one of the challenges they overcame.
As American singer, Jimmy Dean once said,‘ I can’ t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails.’ As I happily adjust my sails towards the other publications within Interact Media Defined( IMD), my colleague – Candace Sofianos King – will take the reins next month.
