NEWS SA vinyls proudly heavy metal-free T he move towards heavy metals-free PVC products comes after the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) informed the South African paint industry of its plans to ban the import of all leads. One of the key areas of SAVA’s Product Stewardship Commitment (PSC) is the phasing out of potentially dangerous or hazardous heavy metals from the PVC production process. Another objective of SAVA’s PSC includes a commitment to the responsible and sustainable vinyl recycle programme that quantifies the opportunity for recycling in post-production and post-consumer waste and sets realistic and sustainable goals. The commitment also aims to ensure open and effective communication with industry role players, the public and government to correct perceptions about the science, reality and local applicability of PVC. In addition, SAVA’s PSC aims to ensure industry health through product, market and application opportunities, therefore improving human capital and overall growth, prosperity and sustainability of the vinyl industry. The Southern African Vinyls Association (SAVA) confirms that all lead and chrome pigments have been removed from locally- manufactured PVC products. SA vinyls sector moves towards being heavy metal-free.
