PROFILE PLENTIFY
Building through constraint
South Africans have grown all too familiar with blackouts – daily reminders of a grid under immense pressure. After years spent working abroad – Kornik leading Google’ s energy efforts in Africa and Nair expanding Discovery’ s Vitality business into the United States – they returned home with a shared mission to build a business that serves both the climate and people.
“ Too many of the solutions being deployed – solar panels, inverters, batteries – are geared towards those who can afford them,” says Kornik.“ But the biggest impact happens when we focus on making energy smarter for everyone.”
Despite this traction, the company remains focused on sustainable, measured growth.“ We’ re not trying to be everywhere at once,” says Kornik.“ We go deep where we can make the most difference.”
In tough environments, you can either wait for perfect conditions, or build what’ s needed. We chose to build.
That philosophy led to the creation of HotBot, Plentify’ s flagship product. A small but powerful device, HotBot connects electric geysers to an intelligent platform that learns household patterns and optimises heating schedules to reduce energy usage during peak hours. The benefits include up to 60 % reduction in peak demand, improved hot water efficiency and significant cost savings for both users and utilities.
Smart technology, local impact
HotBot’ s innovation lies in merging machine learning with usercentric design – but also in how it enables system-wide benefits. In residential developments and social housing units, Plentify’ s technology allows for larger solar installations, smaller battery requirements and better control over when and how power is used.
In short, it makes the grid work better for everyone. This has drawn the attention of stakeholders across the energy ecosystem, explains Nair. Utilities see a way to manage peak demand more effectively. Property developers gain access to cleaner, more efficient infrastructure. And households get affordable solutions that actually work, even in the face of rolling blackouts.“ Our approach is cooperative,” says Nair.“ We design our technology to integrate with existing systems and to benefit entire communities – not just individual households.”
A proven track record
Over the past five years, Plentify has been acknowledged with awards from EEP Africa, HolonIQ and the Southern African Energy Efficiency Confederation. It has participated in global startup accelerators such as Urban X and MassChallenge Switzerland, and was named South Africa’ s Startup of the Year by the Global Startup Awards. Backing has come from prominent local and international investors, including Third Sphere, E3 Capital, and Susquehanna Sustainable Investments.
The founders’ vision
Kornik’ s journey to Plentify began with a deep curiosity for energy systems. With experience at McKinsey, the South Pole Group, and Google, he’ s helped finance Africa’ s largest wind and solar projects, advised governments on renewable energy and worked at the intersection of sustainability and technology for nearly two decades. He holds an MBA from Columbia University, a Master’ s in Finance from UCT, and is a Tutu Leadership Fellow, Echoing Green Fellow and Feldberg Fellow.
Nair’ s path was rooted in growth strategy and execution. At McKinsey, he advised Fortune 500 firms across Africa. At Vitality, he led the North American business to 5x revenue growth in four years. His engineering background and commercial experience make him a natural builder – someone who can scale ideas into positive business outcomes.
Kornik and Nair’ s combined leadership reflects a rare blend of global experience and local commitment.
The road ahead
“ Our mission is simple,” says Kornik.“ Affordable, reliable, and clean energy for everyone. That means building systems that are technically smart and socially intelligent.”
Plentify is already working with utilities, developers and governments to scale its impact. With plans to expand deeper into African markets, and partnerships forming across the US and Latin America, the company is positioning itself as a global leader in smart load management.
“ In tough environments, you can either wait for perfect conditions, or build what’ s needed,” says Nair.“ We chose to build.” ■
