EDITORIAL VECTOR LOGISTICS

Net-zero in motion

With fully electric trucks, Vector Logistics positions itself at the forefront of sustainable logistics, advancing SA’ s net-zero transition.
Vector Logistics is accelerating its sustainability journey with the rollout of its fully electric, bumper-to-bumper net-zero trucks – a major milestone in the company’ s commitment to achieving net-zero operations by 2050. The initiative reflects the company’ s broader strategy to build an agile, resilient, and environmentally responsible logistics network that supports both business growth and climate action.
“ Sustainability remains at the heart of our business strategy. We are focused on creating a logistics network that adapts to market changes while maintaining service excellence,” says Keith Pienaar, CEO of Vector Logistics.
Sustainability embedded across operations
The electric fleet forms part of Vector Logistics’ s wider Environmental, Social and Governance( ESG) strategy, which focuses on reducing operational emissions, transitioning to renewable energy, and embedding sustainability across the business.
“ We believe sustainability must be integrated into everything we do – from electrifying our fleet to expanding renewable energy solutions and building sustainability capability across our workforce,” says Annelie Govender, Chief Human Resources Officer( CHRO) and ESG Lead at Vector Logistics.
With climate science underscoring the urgent need to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, Vector Logistics has set a clear target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 42 % by 2030.“ This innovation,” says Pienaar,“ represents a step change in how we decarbonise our operations.”
A fully electric, end-to-end logistics solution
Vector’ s net-zero fleets pair Volvo Battery Electric Vehicle( BEV) truck tractors with innovative solar-powered e-axle trailers, creating a fully electric, integrated logistics system rather than a traditional single-vehicle solution.
The solar-powered trailers reduce emissions while at the same time powering critical systems such as refrigeration units and tail lifts during transit. A diesel backup is included strictly for emergency use, ensuring continuity for extended cooling requirements when solar battery capacity is depleted.
“ Our net-zero trucks demonstrate our commitment to creating meaningful environmental impact while equipping our people with world-class tools to deliver on our sustainability agenda,” she adds.
Key elements of Vector’ s sustainability roadmap include:
• Expanding electric vehicle adoption across the fleet
• Increasing solar PV installations at facilities to reduce grid reliance
• Rolling out sustainability training to all employees
Leading the future of green logistics in SA
Through innovation and strategic partnerships, Vector Logistics continues to shape a greener, more efficient supply chain for South Africa’ s logistics sector. The fully electric fleet not only reduces carbon emissions, it also positions the company as a leader in sustainable logistics solutions.
These vehicles are currently supporting deliveries in Johannesburg and Cape Town, helping customers meet their own sustainability goals while strengthening collaborative climate action across the supply chain.
“ To remain competitive and contribute meaningfully to the future of our planet, we must lead with innovation,” says Pienaar.“ Our investments in electric vehicles and renewable energy represent the future of logistics in South Africa.” ■
