Toxic work environments are taking a significant toll on employee mental health in South Africa, with one in four working individuals diagnosed with depression. The resulting absenteeism is estimated to cost the economy over R19bn each year in lost productivity.

Bullying and harassment in the workplace remain widespread but underreported, as many employees choose to resign rather than risk retaliation. In the past year alone, over 25 % of resignations were linked to relationship conflicts with direct managers, including bullying.
