PROFILE SPOT-ON FIRE CONTROLS
The name Spot-On Fire Controls reflects Nene’ s philosophy of precision and excellence.“ I wanted a name that spoke to our purpose – doing things right the first time,” he says.“ We aim to be efficient, accurate and dependable, reducing repeat work and ensuring our clients’ safety systems are always spot-on.” won Best Male-Owned Business of the Year, the Business Excellence Award from the local municipality, and the Entrepreneurship Award from the GIBS Business School.“ Those moments reminded me that we’ re on the right path – that we’ re making an impact,” he says.
Operating in Durban’ s competitive business environment comes with its pressures, but Nene says the formula for success remains simple: integrity, responsiveness, and customer service.“ You have to keep your promises to clients,” he says, reiterating:“ Be responsive, deliver on time and make sure you’ re always on top of your game.”
Looking ahead, Spot-On Fire Controls has national ambitions.“ We’ re already in the advanced stages of opening a branch in Gauteng,” Nene says.“ In the next five to 10 years, we want to be operating across South Africa. Fire emergencies don’ t wait— so our response network shouldn’ t either.”
The importance of Spot-On Fire’ s work often hits home during emergencies.“ There have been incidents where our systems made a real difference,” he says.“ At one care home, we supplied extinguishers as part of our CSI initiative. Later, during load shedding, a small kitchen fire broke out – and they managed to extinguish it using the equipment we provided. It saved lives.” In another instance, his team helped put out a car fire on the roadside.“ We were just passing by, but we had our equipment – and that made all the difference,” he recalls.
Spot-On Fire’ s systems are designed to protect people and property through rigorous risk assessment and tailored solutions.“ Every building is different,” explains Nene.“ We assess the activities and materials in the space— an industrial site handling petroleum isn’ t the same as a hotel or office building. Our job is to make sure the system fits the risk.”
Innovation has also played a major role in the company’ s growth.“ We’ ve introduced smoke detection systems that alert occupants before a fire takes hold, and some even trigger automatic suppression systems,” he says.“ It’ s about being proactive – stopping disasters before they start.”
Keeping up with evolving safety regulations requires constant learning.“ We train ourselves and our staff continuously,” Nene says.“ We study international best practices and adapt new technologies to South African contexts.”
His ultimate goal is to reduce fire-related fatalities and environmental damage across the country.“ Every year, thousands of people die in fires, and billions are lost in property damage,” he says.“ We want to change that, to build a safer South Africa for future generations.”
For Nene, family remains his greatest source of strength.“ They’ re the reason I wake up every day,” he says with a smile.“ My wife and our four children keep me going – even when things get tough. They remind me that giving up is never an option.”
His eldest daughter works in government, while his younger children – aged 16, 14, and 6— are still finding their paths.“ I’ d love for them to take over one day,” he says.“ Maybe not all of them, but at least one to carry the torch forward. I want them to dream boldly and believe that they can start something meaningful – just like I did.”
As Spot-On Fire looks to the future, Nene remains grounded in his purpose: to protect lives, empower people, and build a legacy of safety.“ Everything we do is about impact,” he says.“ When people understand fire … when they’ re prepared, they don’ t just save buildings. They save futures.” ■
33 years of credible experience in fire protection services.
But not every challenge has been technical. One of the biggest hurdles, Nene admits, has been changing mindsets.“ Many clients see fire safety as an unnecessary expense until something goes wrong,” he says.“ Our mission is to educate people that prevention is cheaper – and far safer – than repair.”
Despite the challenges, Spot-On Fire Control’ s journey has been marked by recognition and growth. Nene’ s company has
SABS-approved SANS1475( fire extinguishers / hydrants / hoses) and SAQCC – Fire Safety certification.
