ADVERTORIAL MTN SA FOUNDATION
Drawing on its experience in the sector, the MTN SA Foundation seeks to contribute meaningfully to improving understanding of the state of ICT integration in schools while actively supporting practical, scalable solutions.
However, technology is not a silver bullet. Research consistently shows that ICT is most effective when it supports teaching and learning rather than attempts to replace the role of the teacher. Ensuring educators are adequately trained and supported is therefore critical, as is ensuring that technology won’ t exacerbate existing inequalities.
Recognising the broader digital skills challenge facing South Africa’ s youth, the MTN SA Foundation’ s Digital Skills for Digital Jobs( DS4DJ) programme and the MTN Skills Academy form part of a comprehensive response to improving digital readiness. To strengthen reach and impact, the Foundation has introduced ICT Hubs— physical brick-and-mortar facilities that complement digital platforms.
These ICT Hubs provide on-site facilitators, guest lecturers and physical access to the virtual content available through the MTN Skills Academy.
By combining online learning with in-person support, the Hubs address barriers related to connectivity, access to devices and the need for structured learning environments.
The ICT Hubs represent a practical extension of the promise of technology in education. They create spaces where learners and educators can engage meaningfully with digital tools, build skills, and develop confidence in using technology as part of everyday learning and teaching.
ICT integration in education encompasses a broad ecosystem including connectivity, device provision, digital content, educational technology platforms and teacher train extends beyond the classroom, supporting school administration, communication and data-driven decision-making. Implemented effectively, technology can enhance curriculum delivery, improve learner engagement and support more personalised learning experiences.
Digital tools enable access to interactive learning resources, simulations and adaptive platforms that can diagnose learning gaps and tailor support to individual learners. Where devices and connectivity are available beyond school hours, ICT also enables anytime learning, allowing learners to progress at their own pace.
For educators, technology can reduce administrative burdens, streamline lesson planning and support assessment through automated marking and performance tracking. These tools enable teachers to focus more time on instruction and learner support while using data to inform teaching strategies. ICT also creates opportunities for teacher professional development through online courses, webinars and peer-learning communities, particularly in contexts where access to in-person training is limited.
Through this blended approach, the MTN SA Foundation aims to contribute to improved educational outcomes while supporting broader national efforts to build digital capability. By investing in infrastructure, skills and access, the Foundation continues to play a role in ensuring that technology serves as an enabler of opportunity— not a driver of further inequality.
