SPU’ s leadership advantage emerges
Having stepped into the role in January 2026, Professor Debra Meyer shares what can be expected from her tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Sol Plaatje University.

What insights have you gained in your role as Acting Vice-Chancellor at SPU that will inform your new role as VC there?
I’ ve learned that leadership at this level is about building trust and uniting people( students, staff, community, and industry partners) behind a shared purpose. Secondly, I’ ve gained a deeper appreciation for the extraordinary potential of those very staff, students and partners, and for how much impact SPU could have in the Northern Cape if we all worked towards the same goal. I’ ve also learned that every decision carries with it real consequences. That awareness keeps me focused on ethical and transparent leadership. Stepping into this role has reinforced my conviction that leadership is about service, mobilising people around a shared purpose, enabling excellence, and ensuring that every part of the institution contributes meaningfully to our long-term sustainability and impact.
In which areas do you see the greatest opportunities for SPU to innovate in research, teaching, and student development?
The greatest opportunity for SPU lies where our context, strengths and regional needs converge. In research, we must lead in fields that speak directly to the Northern Cape’ s unique environment, such as climate resilience, renewable energy, rural education, youth entrepreneurship, and data science applications in mining, agriculture and socio-economic research. These are our research niche areas and therefore the areas of focus for our research centres.
In teaching and learning, we embed advanced technologies, especially digital simulations, to enhance student engagement and improve success rates. Our next focus is the use of AI in all aspects of university life where it can ethically contribute to our core business.
