EDITOR ' S NOTE

BUILDING for the long term

This annual edition of SA Profile examines how organisations and institutions are responding to changing economic, social and operational conditions. Across sectors, the stories in our 2026 issue reflect a growing emphasis on long-term planning, investment and accountability.
Leadership and execution feature throughout the edition. Thoko Tshabalala-Shandu, Managing Director of VEA Road Maintenance and Civils, discusses building a Black womenled construction company delivering road infrastructure with measurable community impact. In the mining sector, Tshepa Basadi Project Management outlines how its project delivery model supports operational continuity and changing client requirements.
Furthermore, we shift the focus to the University of Mpumalanga and its third Research and Innovation Day, which showcased work by researchers, postgraduate students and academic collaborators across the institution. Vice-Chancellor Professor Thenjiwe Meyiwa sets out how research, innovation and transformation underpin the University’ s academic and social objectives.
We also consider how organisations are managing risk. BDO South Africa’ s Cobie van Antwerpen examines pressures on the public sector linked to digital systems, cybersecurity and constrained budgets. GIB Insurance Brokers Group CEO
Jurie Erwee and CGIC CEO Gideon Bochedi share views on leadership and strategy in a shifting risk environment.
Professor Debra Meyer chats about her tenure as the Vice- Chancellor at Sol Plaatje University. Elsewhere, a commentary on procurement reform looks at its role in reindustrialisation, while a data-led feature examines the growth of extortion and its impact on business.
Together, these contributions provide insight into the people and institutions influencing South Africa’ s economic and institutional direction.
