Q & A TAKE NOTE REPUTATION MANAGEMENT reaching the right audiences through branding, marketing, promotions and communications, all of which ultimately shape reputation. Reputation management is not only about what is visible. It is about what is said quietly when you are not in the room. That unseen layer is often what makes the difference for a brand.
A leader’ s personal brand is inherently intertwined with the brand of the company they represent.
If our objectives or strategy were different, then being in the spotlight might make sense. But that is not the work we do. Discretion allows us to focus on outcomes rather than exposure, and to operate as a trusted partner rather than a public-facing voice. Often the most impactful reputation work is the work no one ever sees: guiding decisions, shaping communications and mitigating risk well before it becomes public.
What have you learnt through building TAKE NOTE, and how has that shaped the way you work with clients?
I’ ve learnt that sustainable businesses are built on culture. From the beginning, Take Note has been shaped around creating a culture that promotes inclusion, empowerment and a genuine passion for the work we do.
People, or organisations, often only consider their reputations when something goes wrong. In your experience, what does managing a reputation correctly actually involve?
Reputation management is not a project you work on occasionally or only activate during a crisis. It is built daily – deliberately and consistently. Every touchpoint a brand has with the world contributes to its reputation, from how it communicates and behaves, to how it delivers on its promises.
Perception is formed long before a customer makes a purchasing decision. What people see, hear and read, how a product smells or feels, and how that product or service is delivered, all contribute to building trust. Reputation lives across the entire customer journey, from first introduction through to purchase and beyond.
When businesses take ownership of this, reputation becomes a strategic asset rather than a risk to manage. It requires an alignment between strategy, behaviour and communication as well as a clear understanding that consistency over time is what builds credibility.
Your work is largely behind the scenes. Why is discretion such an important part of reputation management?
Our work is intentionally behind the scenes because our role is to build our clients’ reputations, not our own. Effective reputation management is not about visibility for the advisor; it is about ensuring that the organisation, its leadership and its message are positioned correctly and consistently.
Culture influences how people show up, how decisions are made and how consistently a brand behaves, all of which directly affect reputation. When people feel empowered and aligned, their work is stronger and their thinking, more considered.
This belief is carried through into how we work with clients. We don’ t operate in isolation from their teams or realities. We work alongside them, helping to strengthen the behaviours and disciplines that support long-term reputation building.
In South Africa’ s current climate, what should leaders be more mindful of when it comes to their personal and organisational reputations?
Personal and organisational reputations are no longer separate. A leader’ s personal brand is inherently intertwined with the brand of the company they represent. With easy access to online profiles and personal information, behaviour in a personal capacity can and does impact an organisation.
Even when individuals believe certain actions or opinions are private, they rarely are. Visibility is constant and perception is formed quickly. How leaders conduct themselves, publicly and privately, influences trust, confidence and perceptions of integrity among colleagues and customers.
In today’ s climate, reputation is shaped as much by behaviour as it is by communication. Leaders who understand this are far better positioned to protect and strengthen their organisations over the long term. ■
