Q & A: GAUTENG TRANSPORT AUTHORITY
One province,
one journey
Your career has moved through water, roads and public transport. What has prepared you for this role? I began in a development programme at the former Boksburg Transitional Local Council, moving through water engineering, roads, stormwater and transport. That grounding taught me to understand infrastructure as a complete system. Later, at Rand Water and in senior transport roles in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg, I managed complex projects and helped lead the Harambee and Rea Vaya BRT systems. The enduring lesson is that technical competence is not enough: projects require disciplined planning, sound governance, adequate resources and genuine stakeholder participation. My leadership is strategic, transformational and ethical. I consult widely and use data, but I am also prepared to make decisions and remain accountable for them.
Why was the Gauteng Transport Authority( TAG) established? TAG was created to address a public transport system that is fragmented, unreliable, unsafe and often inaccessible. Services are planned by different institutions, schedules are not aligned, fare structures vary and facilities do not always connect.
Our purpose is to connect people, places and opportunities sustainably. We are a planning and enabling authority: we coordinate integrated transport planning, infrastructure and investment across the province, working through municipalities, provincial departments, operators and other partners.
What are the Authority ' s immediate priorities? The recently approved Integrated Transport Master Plan, the Provincial Strategic Transport Plan, and municipal plans give us the planning levers. We are consolidating these into an integrated investment plan so that projects can be prioritised and sequenced coherently.
At the same time, we are strengthening stakeholder relationships and advancing the Integrated Fare Management programme. That includes a faremanagement policy, account-based ticketing, passenger-information channels, an integrated mobility data platform and the mobility centre required to support the system.
