For many years, conversations around steel quality were largely confined to technical discussions between engineers, mills, fabricators, and project teams. Quality was often viewed as a compliance matter, managed behind the scenes through specifications, testing, and professional oversight.
Today, however, the conversation has become broader and far more urgent.
From engineering issue to business risk Steel quality is no longer only an engineering concern. It is increasingly a business risk issue that affects project certainty, infrastructure resilience, procurement governance, investor confidence, and long-term economic sustainability.
As South Africa continues to navigate infrastructure backlogs, economic pressure, and changing industrial dynamics, the need for trusted, traceable, and quality-assured steel has never before been more important.
This conversation is not new to the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction( SAISC). Established in 1956, SAISC has spent nearly 70 years supporting the advancement of steel construction across Southern Africa through technical guidance, industry collaboration, skills development, and the promotion of quality and best practice throughout the steel value chain. Over the decades, the industry has evolved significantly, but one principle has remained constant: long-term infrastructure confidence depends on quality, credibility, and technical integrity.
