In a typically male-dominated industry, what distinctive leadership qualities do women bring to the table in reshaping the sector?
There are many women taking their place in the energy industry at the moment – inspirational women. Women inherently are nurturing, so use that to your advantage. Lead your teams with strength, decisiveness, compassion and empathy.

Do you think enough is being done to drive transformation – beyond compliance? Transformation is an ongoing process. It should be intentional, clear and supported. Having said that, women taking up seats at leadership tables, don’ t be content with just occupying the seat, make your voices heard, speak up, contribute, be impactful, be purposeful and master your craft with each challenge presented.
When you reflect on your vast experience in the energy sector did you envision your path to where you are today? One of my greatest mentors, Simphiwe Mehlomakulu, Chairman of the Reatile Group Board, envisaged this path for me 12 years ago. At the time I did not have the confidence to dream this big but in my heart of hearts I always knew that one day I would be entrusted with the responsibility of adding value. Adding value not only to an organisation but also to individuals, being of service and whilst I may not have understood the destination, I was definitely going to take every opportunity along the journey.
A quote I resonate with daily is“ everything you’ ve ever wanted is on the other side of fear”, motives me in all aspects of my life. If you do something to the very best of your ability, you can only succeed.
What would you attribute your success to, and what continues to motivate you? Work hard! Learn all you can! Take up opportunities to learn from your mentors / industry leaders. Challenge yourself. Get into rooms where you may feel out of place but be present, ask questions, challenge the status-quo, earn your green fees and above all else, contribute to the discussions.
What are the greatest lessons you have learned as a leader? Be your authentic self always. Know you are constantly learning and evolving. Admit your mistakes and learn the lessons. Do better. Rely on the team around you, take people along and treat everyone with respect, fairness and dignity.
What has been your greatest challenge as a leader, and how did you overcome this? Myself – that voice inside my head where sometimes doubt creeps in and you start questioning yourself and your decisions to the point that you go round in circles. Surround yourself with great teams. Accept that you don’ t know it all, listen, collaborate and create an environment where every employee is comfortable to contribute, challenge the status quo and engage meaningfully.
What are key highlights of your journey? There have been many highlights, but what has been most impactful to me, are the instances where I may have played a small part in providing someone with an opportunity, boost, a step up and the result has been the growth of that person beyond their wildest expectations. Those are the highlights that warm my heart and soul. �
