PROCUREMENT

Procurement, Performance & Empowerment:

Africa’ s energy trifecta

ENGIE shows how strategic procurement can unlock local value and sustainability in Africa’ s energy projects.
By Zamashandu Mbatha, Senior Project Procurement Officer at ENGIE AFRICA
Procurement is not the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about transformation in Africa’ s energy sector. But perhaps it should be. Often viewed as a back-office function focused on compliance and cost control, in the hands of strategic leaders, procurement becomes a lever for change, enabling equity, resilience, and long-term impact across the energy value chain.
Procurement decisions shape the entire lifecycle of a project, from who builds it to who benefits from it and how sustainable and inclusive it becomes. It is not just about buying. It is about building ecosystems.
This mindset is particularly relevant as Africa enters a new phase of energy infrastructure development. With climate change, grid instability, and economic inequality presenting interlinked challenges, systems-level thinking is needed now more than ever.
Procurement decisions shape the entire lifecycle of a project, from who builds it to who benefits from it and how sustainable and inclusive it becomes.
