PROJECT SALT Architects
The Cape Flats Managed Aquifer Recharge( MAR) plant is an innovative response to Cape Town’ s water crisis, providing a sustainable solution to secure the city’ s future water supply.
At the core of the project is the innovative process developed by civil engineers, which involves recharging the Cape Flats Aquifer, a vital water source for the region.
Located within the False Bay Nature Reserve in Pelican Park, this facility tackles the need for sustainable water management by treating effluent to potable standards and recharging the Cape Flats Aquifer.
The site, a flat sandy expanse bordered by dunes, endures strong prevailing southeasterly winds and corrosive coastal conditions, all of which informed the design approach.
Treated effluent is purified to potable standards and reinjected into the aquifer to sustain its levels. This process occurs through a series of four linear filtration facilities, carefully arranged on an artificial slope to enable a gravity-fed filtration system.
The journey starts at the highest filtration building and descends to the lowest, where the purified water is redirected to the aquifer. www. sabuildingreview. co. za 93
