PROJECT Kevin Lloyd Architects
Unbridled pursuit of luxury and comfort
Created for a young couple of medical professionals and their children, this Durban home is more than a residence β itβ s a retreat.
This home was designed as the main residence for a young couple of medical professionals and their children β a family whose busy careers required a sanctuary that balances calm, comfort, and practicality.
Set on a gentle slope overlooking a conservation area, the site itself influenced the design. The natural buffer not only shields the home from prevailing winds but also frames uninterrupted views of the biodiverse landscape.
The architecture needed to directly reflect their lifestyle: restorative yet practical, family-oriented yet refined.
A sunken three-car garage conceals services and vehicles, allowing the architecture above to take centre stage. From here, residents are greeted by an oak-clad staircase β a warm vertical spine that divides the home and sets the tone of arrival.
At ground level, a double-volume circulation space forms the centre of the home, connecting the lounge, dining, and kitchen areas into a seamless flow. A covered entertainment area extends this axis outdoors, linking the family to nature while fostering moments of togetherness.
